Introduction to How To Find Expired Domains for free

Here you are ! If you already know the purpose of owning expired domains, good on you ! You can move straight to the guide below. But, if you are new at scraping to find expired domains or maybe just curious, let me explain briefly.

The benefits of owning expired domains, allows us to build what we call a private blog network or PBN which is basically a number of high authority expired domains that link to a site that we want to rank.
If you are here, you probably know that you need backlinks to rank a website, the more backlinks you have linking to your website better the chance is to rank higher in Google.
So, let’s make it simple ! Imagine finding expired domains (previously owned) with thousands of links coming from multiple sites, register them and use them to link to the website you want to rank. This technique allows you to be the ONE and ONLY using the expired and with full control over it, instead of begging for a guest post !! You got me ?!!

You could also use an expired domain with high authority to build your own website and start fresh with good metrics !!

Please note : this is a free method to find expired domains using Xenu Link Sleuth – a scraping software that will look deeper into unregistered domains. There are different tools out there that can make your life easier and make the process of finding expired domains faster, you can also buy expired domains directly from specific platforms.

However, if you are like me and think that finding expired domains is a good skill to learn, read on !
I heard some many times in life that is better to learn how to fish than buying or getting a fish from someone – So, for all of the guys out there starting out with SEO, learn as much as you can, you will soon be rewarded. Trust me !

Ok, now let’s get to the main topic : How to find these expired domains

First, we will need few tools:

Xenu Link Sleuth
Mozbar chrome extension
Majestic SEO or TF/CF bulk checker
Domain availability checker
Google Chrome
Excel or Open office

1- Setting up Google

Open a new Google tab and go to search settings. Then click on « never show instants results » and 100 results per page.

Then you will need to install the MozBar, which gives you metrics details on the google search result page. I use the Google Chrome web browser so if you do too, install the MozBar extension.

2- Finding websites to scrape

In order to find expired domains, we need first to get our hands on websites that list other websites like directories or links pages.

Let’s make our first Google query, type in : « your keyword » + « links »

As you can see, you will get 100 pages in your google search results. All pages have their own metrics, page authority, and domain authority.

In that case, the MozBar extension will help us download the full google search result page into a CSV spreadsheet.

Click on the top left icon of your google search result page

Open the file, you will get something like that :

Now, keep building your list ! To do that, you can download the second page and add it to your CSV or change the keyword in your google search.

Once you are happy with the amount of links you have, it is time to check them all and see if they link to available expired domains to register.

3- Xenu Link Sleuth

You got your website list on your CSV spreadsheet, now you need to copy and paste all of these sites to a .txt file and save it.

Now let’s open Xenu Link Sleuth. Change the settings as below.

Click ok. Then go to File, Check Url List (Test) and chose the .txt file you saved previously.
Xenu will start researching expired domains.

When it’s done go to File > Export to TAB separated file

You will need to save as a .txt file and re-open it into Excel or Open Office.
Then, in the « Status-text » column we will keep all the websites with the « no such host » mention.

Ok. Are you still with me ? Great !
As you can see « no such host » means that these websites are probably available. Let’s check this out.

4- Checking if domains are available to register

Head over to Ninja SEO bulk domain availability checker tool and enter the websites.

Export the list of available domains. Now, we need to check their metrics.

Go to Majestic SEO if you already have an account or to (FREE) and enter websites.

I strongly recommend to get yourself a majestic account which will help in many ways. In that case, you can do a bulk checking and analyze websites metrics in details.

You are now ready to build your own PBN with your new expired domains. If you have any questions, comments below.

I will come up with my own PBN guide pretty soon so stay tuned !

Cheers !!!!
